The Costs of EPA Regulation
Coming along with the recent federal budget compromise of 2011, a multitude of national deficit problems face the United States and has become a pretty hotly contested topic for debate. Now that the budget proposals have been put through, there still remains a large amount of contention over EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) post accordance budgeting. The decision to cut into the EPA’s budget (16 percent down from 2010) continuously is a point of indignation for many Republican representatives who see the EPA as an organization stifling both job growth and revenue generation for large businesses due to expensive, excessive regulations.
Regulations placed upon power divisions are the primary issue being faced for debate. Restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions, and the Clean Air Act have previously come under fire from the GOP, and have been commonly viewed as a source of stagnation of both revenue and employment growth.
Fundamentally, the EPA has begun to restrict too many things in such a short period of time, and the GOP feels that the agency has overstepped its boundaries and beset its power. The questioning of recent EPA regulations on energy can be understood, but the agency has also made many arguable decisions since the end of 2010, spanning throughout year 2011. It would seem the EPA would have lost sight of many of its own major initiatives and acutely narrowed their focus to one or two regulations that seem to have little to no effect on public health.
The EPA has begun to suffer from poor delegation of their resources. Their focus on keeping cap and trade taxes on regulations has diverted their attention away from many of their programs directly relating to the health of the populace. Programs like the fight against water contamination and working to reduce chances of asbestos exposure seem to have hit the chopping block in favor of regulations costing companies massive amounts of money, and stifling our economy in the process.
The EPA seems to be set in their ways on a continuous approach to expensive regulation. The most unfortunate thing about this dispute is that the EPA is in turn causing major damage to itself in the process. As the agency continues to defend costly regulations that result in little to no effect on health, GOP officials as well as business leaders will continue efforts to restrict EPA power. This could include further budget cuts in an attempt to push back at the environmental agency and right the ship.

Editorial: Buckwalter right for Greene County court

Greene County is getting a new common pleas judge because Judge Timothy Campbell is retiring.

The fall contest isn’t as lively as the primary, when three lawyers sought the Republican nomination. Mike Buckwalter prevailed in that contest, and now he faces Democrat Joe Graf.

Greene County is overwhelmingly Republican, but, in judgeship races, the candidates’ political party doesn’t appear next to their name on the ballot.

Both candidates have good reputations; either would do well, but a slight nod goes to Mr. Buckwalter.

He’s an experienced lawyer who has handled a variety of cases, civil and criminal. He has been a magistrate, acting judge, arbitrator and law clerk. He clearly has been thinking about things he would like to do as a judge, things that would save time and money.

Mr. Buckwalter, 53, was in line to be a common pleas judge some years ago through appointment by the governor. But a political tussle at the time got in the way.

Now he’s going for the job the hard way: running in what is a low-profile, though still expensive, contest. He loaned his campaign $60,000 in the primary and says he may put still more into his race.

In the past, Mr. Buckwalter has been active in Republican Party politics. If he’s elected, he needs to stay out of the party’s work. As a judge in a small, tight-knit, Republican stronghold, he needs to be sensitive to being impartial and apolitical.

Mr. Graf, 63, was the Greene County public defender until he retired. He has his own law practice and has been an acting judge in Fairborn. He has been involved in a plethora of community activities. Some years ago he ran for juvenile court judge and lost in a primary by fewer than 100 votes, a hard way to lose.

Mr. Graf supports merit selection of judges. (Mr. Buckwalter does not.) He also would like the Greene County prosecutor to start a diversion program, which would divert some non-violent offenders from being charged (and getting a criminal record), provided they did certain things that showed remorse and a willingness to stay out of future trouble.

Both candidates are concerned about jail capacity in Greene County, what with one of the adult detention center’s four pods being mothballed and another being used for a drug and alcohol treatment program.

Mr. Buckwalter and Mr. Graf both could do a good job. This is no-lose election at least for voters. Mr. Buckwalter’s energy and passion give him the edge.

Editorial: Anderson is better for Greene County

Greene County voters can either re-elect Republican Alan Anderson as one of their three county commissioners. Or they can take a chance on Democrat Steve Key.

They should re-elect Mr. Anderson.

An attorney who has represented local governments — including Beavercreek Twp., Jamestown, Yellow Springs, Clifton and Spring Valley — he was elected four years ago. Judging from his literature, he wants voters to know that he’s not raised taxes and that he opposes “Obamacare and Obama socialism or any form of socialism.”

Pressed about what he’s trying to reassure voters about, he concedes that concerns about socialism don’t often come up in his role as county commissioner.

Mr. Anderson says his interests as a commissioner have been bringing high-speed Internet service to rural areas of the county; improving the capacity of the county’s water department and getting Clark State University to have a physical presence in the county, which it does now have just off I-675.

Mr. Anderson can be overly parochial, witness his reluctance to vote to put up much money for the Dayton Development Coalition. Given just how hard that group advocates for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, that’s hardly an expenditure to be stingy about.

And there’s something unfair about Greene County kicking in a lot of money when the Base Realignment and Closure Commissions are in full swing, but then pulling back after any threats have been repelled.

Protecting Wright-Patterson, after all, lasts beyond the BRAC rounds.

Mr. Anderson has experience that’s relevant to the job, and he can dig into issues that he cares about.

Mr. Key says his employment is a contract to gather local statistical data for the U.S. Department of Commerce. He’s also worked as an organizer for the Kerry and Obama campaigns in rural counties in Ohio and formerly he was a bank trust officer.

His campaign literature quotes Gary Haines, the former Montgomery County sheriff who died in 2000 and has since been succeeded by two different sheriffs. Mr. Haines, Mr. Key says, called him “Mr. Fix It” with regard to a gun buy-back program.

Mr. Key believes county commission meetings should be televised, and he’s critical that the commission has all Republicans on it. Asked what he takes issue with that the county is doing, he had no major criticisms.

Mr. Anderson’s local government experience goes beyond the four years he’s been on the commission. That background counts for something. To move out an incumbent, Mr. Key has to make a stronger case than just that Greene County is too cozy.

It wouldn’t be an election without John Mitchel on the ballot.

The retired Air Force officer from Beavercreek has been running for something almost every two years since his first major bid for office in 1998, when he ran for governor as a Reform Party candidate.

(Remember third- party presidential candidate Ross Perot? That was his party.)

Since then, he has run, as a Republican, for the U.S. Senate, and also against former U.S. Rep. David Hobson — twice. Now this year will be his second run against Congressman Steve Austria, who represents Greene and Clark counties.

Give the guy credit for persistence.

But he’s still the neophyte that he was in 1998, when he had 20,000 copies of his school funding plan printed.

In 2004, when asked what he wanted to do in the Senate, he said:

“My first act if elected to the Senate would be to lobby the president to sign an executive order to declare the unborn innocent ‘persons,’ thus giving them the full protection of the Fifth Amendment.”

Mr. Mitchel, 62, opposes the Obama health care initiative, the Obama stimulus, the bank bailout under former President George W. Bush, and he supports the (unworkable) FairTax plan, which would eliminate the federal income tax, substituting a sales tax.

He also charges that Greene and Clark counties are steeped in cronyism that results in sweetheart deals for Republican insiders.

Congressman Austria is completing his first term in Washington. He was effectively handpicked by Rep. Hobson to replace him when he retired; Rep. Austria’s wife was on the congressman’s staff.

Previously, Rep. Austria served 10 years in the Ohio Senate.

As a freshman in the minority party, Rep. Austria could hardly be expected to make a big impact. In fact, though, he did get national attention for telling the Columbus Dispatch, in a discussion about his opposition to the Obama stimulus, that Franklin Roosevelt caused the Great Depression (which, of course, began way before the president was elected).

In talking about his job, Rep. Austria emphasizes constituent service, which, of course, does come with the position. But it is the most routine part of it.

He’s much less comfortable taking tough positions. He rarely diverges from his party, although he did vote for the administration’s Cash for Clunkers program.

He said he was persuaded by auto dealers that some of them would go out of business without this incentive.

On the other hand, Rep. Austria opposed the $787 billion stimulus program, without which unemployment would be immeasurably higher, and he is critical of the Bush bank bailout (that occurred before Mr. Austria went to Congress).

(Many economists believe that the bank and insurance failures that surely would have ensued without the Bush administration’s intervention could have pushed the country toward a Depression.)

Rep. Austria has refused to support earmarks, even though that was one way former Rep. Hobson made sure that Wright-Patterson Air Force Base got some of the improvements and commitments it needed sooner rather than later.

Rep. Austria was, for a while, reconsidering that position; then all the Republicans in the House said they wanted a moratorium.

It’ll be too bad if important advocacy for the base falls to U.S. Rep. Mike Turner and Ohio’s U.S. senators alone. That would be copping out, for political convenience.

Rep. Austria doesn’t face a serious challenge this year and is unlikely to any time soon unless he really fumbles. He’s cautious, so he’s not a disaster waiting to happen.

For the privilege of that job security, he really does need to seize the important platform he has. He has work to do to grow into an aggressive advocate for the region and for the issues he cares most about.

Virgil Vaduva has some ideas that are beyond the fringe. As pertinent, he’s running for the wrong office.

He’s challenging Alan Anderson in the Republican primary for Greene County commissioner.

However, his complaints, he said, are not with Mr. Anderson, but with Commissioners Marilyn Reid and Rick Perales. He suggests they have a special relationship with the Dayton Development Coalition that results in their campaigns benefitting, but he can’t explain what he means.

Mr. Vaduva’s views, which he characterizes as more Libertarian than Republican, are most intense about national and state politics. He says taxes are a “violent means” of taking people’s property.

The immigrant from Romania says he has been involved with some Tea Party activists and that he helped start the Xenia Liberty Group.

Specifically, he complains that property taxes in Greene County are too high, though the county commission gets little in the way of property tax proceeds; most of that tax money goes to schools. In an interview with the Dayton Daily News, it wasn’t clear whether Mr. Vaduva understands that.

Considering the issues he’s hottest about, you’d think a legislative office or even a school board seat would fit the Cedarville resident who works in information technology better.

He also criticizes the Greene County Children’s Services Board as an example of a government agency that spends too much employing people as opposed to providing direct services. That characterization is bewildering because, of course, the bulk of that agency’s budget is going to go toward people — those who investigate abuse complaints, those who monitor children in foster care, those who screen and recruit foster parents.

Though he’s pleasant, Mr. Vaduva is the wrong person for this important job.

Mr. Anderson is completing his first four-year term. He is earnest, but unlikely to ever grow into the most knowledgeable commissioner. Nonetheless, he has carved out some interests.

For instance, he’s especially focused on the fact that much of Greene County — he says half of the county’s land mass — doesn’t have fast, reliable Internet service and is instead dependent on dial-up.

That’s horribly frustrating for those trying to work at home, for children trying to do school work and for anyone who wants to be part of the 21st century.

Whether Mr. Anderson is bringing together the right people or has found the solution isn’t clear. But he is paying attention to a vexing problem.

Mr. Anderson came into office after he knocked off Marilyn Reid in the primary four years ago. Ms. Reid had long been involved in the Greene County Republican Party and also represented the area in the legislature, though not without controversy. She has a long line of critics for her style and on substance; Mr. Anderson was seen as a more go-along-get-along kind of person.

With a term under his belt, no one would suggest he is going to be the person who leads any bold transformation of Greene County’s ways of doing business, and he isn’t politically courageous.

(Though he should have been defending the Dayton Development Coalition and what it does for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and especially for Greene County, Mr. Anderson was on the side of whacking the money the coalition gets to advocate for the region.)

Mr. Vaduva, who has never attended a county commission meeting, isn’t interested in the work of county government. Sticking with Mr. Anderson is the better choice.

Editorial: Freshman Martin best for 70th Ohio district

There are some unusual doings this year in the contest to represent voters in Beavercreek, Fairborn and Xenia in the Ohio House of Representatives in Columbus. Freshman Rep. Jarrod Martin, of the 70th District, is being challenged in the Republican primary by a candidate who shouldn’t be written off.

Xenia City Council member Bill Miller is not drawing any particular philosophical distinction between himself and the incumbent. He grants that they are the same kind of conservative.

He does complain that his opponent has not initiated legislation on the major problems of the day: jobs and the economy. But freshman members of the minority party in the House are not typically the ones who drive major legislation.

Basically what we have here is a challenger who has long wanted to be in the legislature and was disappointed to lose in a crowded primary in 2008. Mr. Miller also didn’t come in second.

Now he hopes that public anger at incumbents — plus a one-on-one contest — might be enough to pull him in, against a first-term representative who, like most first-termers, is not exactly a household name.

All that is fair enough. But voters lack any compelling reason to change horses, to put a new freshman in and start over on the learning curve that all freshmen face.

The two candidates appear to be of roughly equal ability. They had similar political backgrounds before the 2008 primary. Mr. Martin was a member of the Beavercreek City Council.

Rep. Martin wants to allow local school districts to opt out of the requirement for all-day kindergarten, though he was, in an interview with the Dayton Daily News editorial board, fuzzy about how that would work, as on the details of other subjects.

Neither candidate is brimming over with ideas for dealing with the state’s looming budget crisis, though Rep. Martin suggests looking at sentencing rules, a proposal made by other Republicans last year.

Mr. Miller insists that spending is “out of control,” but offers little to support that, in the face of repeated and steep budget cuts. He does say that $1 million in federal stimulus money is slated for signs labeling various projects as stimulus projects, which he opposes.

Mr. Miller has the support of some local elected officials. He specifically touts the support of the mayors of Beavercreek, Fairborn and Xenia.

Rep. Martin cites a good many more endorsements, which is to be expected.

That there is some support for each reflects a certain tribalism in Greene County Republican politics, a matter of little relevance to voters.

The incumbent hasn’t shown signs of playing a major role in Columbus, that he will stand out as a party leader, or as a facilitator of inventive bipartisan solutions, or as a policy expert in some area. But he is only 30 and has time to develop. He has been a diligent and earnest lawmaker.

The challenger also has not demonstrated that he would be an exceptional choice, though, he, too, would presumably be responsible about the work.

The 70th District has legitimate reason for wondering if it is represented as well as it might be. But, in the choice it faces, it would do best to stick with the young incumbent.

Dear Chairman Redfern,

As you know, ours is a non-partisan organization, and we can demonstrate strong support from both Republicans and Democrats. That is why I was optimistic that there existed a basis for communication on issues of common interest following my recent meeting with you which from my perspective went well. You correctly pointed out that Governor Strickland has been supportive of certain aspects of our agenda, and you certainly acknowledged that there are many Democrats who are sympathetic to all or part of our agenda as well.

Since then, my optimism has waned.

Your heavy hand was reported to be the major factor in forcing Jennifer Garrison, a supporter of pro-life positions, from the Democratic statewide ticket for next fall. It was hard not to interpret that action as a direct slap at the millions of Ohioans, whether Democrat, Republican or Independent who support the cause of life.

Now I am witness to one of the pettiest acts I have ever seen by a so-called political leader. Speaker Budish, as you may know, denied the request of Rep. John Adams to bring an outstanding young constituent, Elizabeth Trisler, to the House floor to receive a proclamation for her achievement in winning the National Right to Life Oratory contest. Her speech, Mr. Redfern, was a powerful and eloquent expression of her deeply held views regarding life. She is the kind of young woman we all would be intensely proud to have as a member of our family.

As you know, the recognition in the House Chamber of outstanding achievement by Ohioans has never been subjected to the kind of political litmus test applied by Speaker Budish, whose office says she was denied the recognition given thousands of other young Ohioans over the years because it was "political." I wonder if Mr. Budish would allow recognition of a champion debate team only if he agreed with the side it advocated in the championship. Shame on Speaker Budish, with whom we will communicate separately.

You can readily see, Mr. Redfern, these two actions in just a week's time appear to be a direct attack by your party on the pro-life constituency in Ohio.

My question of you, then, is whether you were sincere when we met. I reported our meeting to my Board, and now feel misled by you. Every appearance is that you and the party establishment are captive of pro-abortion ideologues, so much so that even the simple recognition of a student's achievement must be rejected for fear of alienating this constituency. What can I report to our constituents concerning the position of the Ohio Democratic Party? I will share your response to this letter with our Board and membership as well.

In the spirit of non-partisanship, I would also like to invite you and your wife to be my guests on the evening of March 5 for our event featuring Sarah Palin as speaker. I am sure you agree that her commitment to life, as evidenced by the way she and her husband welcomed a developmentally challenged son into their family, is inspiring. Dear Friend,

Richard Cordray needs to join 13 other state attorneys general in calling for the removal of a provision in the national health care bill that exempts the state of Nebraska from having to pay for any newly eligible Medicaid recipients.

Ohio is bleeding jobs and facing a $6 billion budget deficit next year. The last thing Ohio taxpayers can afford is to foot the bill for Medicaid recipients in Nebraska!

Richard Cordray needs to stand up to fellow Democrats Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and President Obama before Ohioans are forced to pay millions in increased Medicaid spending for services we’ll never receive. I urge him to speak out and join his fellow attorneys general who have already asked Congress to remove the “Cornhusker Kickback” from the health care bill.

This provision is beyond outrageous. It amounts to a $100 million payoff to one senator for his support of the health care bill. Richard Cordray’s job is to protect Ohio. He needs to do the right thing and immediately ask for the repeal of this provision.

GOUVERNEUR, NY - Congressman-elect Bill Owens was sworn in at noon today.

Owens indicated in a press release released shortly afterwards that he was now in favor of the the "Affordable Healthcare for America Act" bill in direct contrast to his earlier position during the election campaign.

According to Politico.com, Mr. Owens assured voters that he felt the public option had no place in the health care reform bill. Contrary to that position, Mr. Owens now indicates that he intends to vote in favor of the bill even though it now contains a public option.

UPDATED: A spokesman for Congressman Owens indicated correctly that Mr. Owens had recanted his solid position against public option later in the campaign, clarifying that he did not wish public option to be a 'litmus test' for the Health Reform bill and that on Oct. 30th, several days prior to the election, in a debate had stated that he generally supported the public option as it was now written (at that time.)

Mr. Owens also indicated during his campaign that he was firmly opposed to cutting Medicare benefits, taxing health care benefits, and increased taxes on the middle class in any way as you can see clearly in the screenshot below, taken directly from Mr. Owens' campaign website.

The House Health reform bill contains sections that cut Medicare benefits, tax existing health care benefits, and increases taxes on the middle class, yet Mr. Owens stated today that he will now vote in favor of those things contrary to what he had promised the voters of NY's 23rd Congressional District that he would vote against.

Mr. Owens indicated in his press release today that "This legislation will reform the insurance industry and provide increased access to affordable healthcare without taxing healthcare benefits, cutting Medicare benefits or raising taxes on the middle class, and that is exactly the direction we need to go."

When The Gouverneur Times attempted to contact Mr. Owens to clarify this information, we received no direct response to our phone or email inquiries. Both FactCheck.org and the Congressional Budget Office agree that HR 3962 contains potentially hundreds of billions of dollars in planned cuts to Medicare, yet Mr. Owens indicates that he supports this legislation and says that it does not cut Medicare benefits. Either Mr. Owens has been snowed or the public is about to be.

HR 3962 also includes a range of various taxes on middle-class families as well as language to repeal tax relief already in place. Has Congressman Owens blindly followed Ms. Pelosi's rhetoric in believing that the end to a tax cut is not the same thing as an increase in taxes or is he hedging his bet with very carefully chosen words?

HR 3962 now also contains language that allows illegal immigrants to be covered under the legislation. When The Gouverneur Times attempted to contact Mr. Owens for clarification of this language, we received no response other than the press release heretofore mentioned. Specifically, we asked if illegal immigrants would be forced to purchase healthcare insurance as citizens will be and whether or not they would be forced to do so at standard rates or if they would qualify for the public option subsidy.

The Associated Press said this morning that: "House leaders said that, in keeping with the Hispanic Caucus' demands, there was not likely to be any prohibition added to the House bill against illegal immigrants shopping in the exchange."

In a speech made to Congress a short time ago, President Obama had stated that the bill would not contain support for illegal immigrants - a statement for which he was called a "liar" by Rep. Joe Wilson. Rep. Wilson was severely chastised for his comment at the time though it would now seem to be true.

The mixed-up mess that was the 23rd Congressional District Special Election was a close race between Democrat Bill Owens and Conservative Doug Hoffman. Many feel that it was unlikely Mr. Owens would have won those crucial few thousand votes if the voting public was aware of his intent with regard to the Health Care bill. The majority of residents in this district do not support the Health Reform bill as it is now written and many feel like they've become victims of a fraud perpetrated by their chosen candidate.

Breaking campaign promises is not unusual for politicians... it's a cliche. This is almost certainly a record though. Mr. Owens broke no less than 4 promises in his first 24 hours in office.

Gov. Ted Strickland’s approval rating among Ohio adults has dropped to 48 percent in an Ohio Poll released on Friday, Oct. 30, the first time it had been below 50 percent in five Ohio Polls dating back to May 2007.

Gov. Ted StricklandIn the same poll, the approval rating for Strickland’s fellow Democrat, President Barack Obama, dropped to 52 percent, down from 63 percent in an April 2009 Ohio Poll, sponsored by the University of Cincinnati.

The poll also showed a glimmer of optimism about better times to come. Thirty three percent said economic conditions in Ohio were getting better, up from 20 percent in April and more than double the 12 percent in May who said things were getting better.

University of Cincinnati poll showing approval ratings for Gov. Strickland since May 2007.The drops in approval ratings has more immediate significance for Strickland, who’s up for re-election next year, than for Obama, just finishing the first year of a four-year term.

Eric Rademacher, Ohio Poll co-director, noted in an e-mail that more Ohioans - 48 percent - approve of Strickland’s job performance than disapprove - 37 percent.

“However, his approval has dropped 20 points since May of 07, which is almost identical to his increase in disapproval since,” Rademacher said. “So, that is a trend Strickland will want to reverse as we go into 2010.”

Other key poll findings:

*More Ohioans - 49 percent - disapprove of Strickland’s handling of the Ohio economy than approve - 41 percent.

*A majority of Democrats - 52 percent - approve of Strickland’s handling of the economy while a majority of Republicans - 58 percent - and independents - 59 percent - disapprove of how the governor’s handled the economy.

*Fifty percent of Ohioans approve of Obama’s handling of foreign affairs overall, down from 62 percent in April.

*Forty five percent of Ohioans now approve of Obama’s handling of the economy, down from 56 percent in April.

*Most Ohioans rate U.S. economic conditions as either fair - 45 percent - or poor- 47 percent, about the same as April.

*Also, most Ohioans also rate Ohio economic conditions as either fair - 39 percent - or poor - 52 percent -, again about the same as April.

The poll was taken from Oct. 14-Oct. 20 with 808 adults across the state and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percent.

Below is a strand of e-mail that has been passed to me a few times today. Now, I'm not throwing this up to pursuade anybody one way or the other. I'm putting this up to start a conversation and hear what some folks have to say. I'm curious to know because I've gotten this on more than one occasion today. Is it really a School Board member trying to intimidate an organization, or is it a candidate trying to win an election? You tell me your thoughts. Remember, please keep it clean and respectful.

The intimidating methods used by certain Members of the Board of Education, please review. Understand a Board Member has no authority or power outside of the Public Meetings unless voted on by the Board for certain responsibilities. Let me clarify my involvement with the Football Parents Club. I met (name removed) a few times at football games I attended. After the Centerville game...which my wife and I attended...I introduced myself to Tim (last name removed), President of the Football Parents Club. I asked Tim if I could address the Football Parents Club. Mr. (last name removed) made it clear that they could not endorse a candidate or get involved in the election. He did not have a problem with me attending, since I was a Beavercreek School Parent with children that will be playing Eager Beavers next year and eventually participate in Beavercreek Football Team. During the meeting, Mr. (last name removed) clarified to the parents attending that my presence was not an endorsement.
I was told by a former PTO president that you had attended and spoke at PTO meetings while running for the Board of Education. I don't see my request to participate in the Football Club meeting any different from your appearances and participation in PTO meetings during past election cycles, PTO's are also 501(c)3 organizations. In my opinion, other candidates have equal opportunities to pursue organizations and fellowship with their members within the School System. Board Members really should be attending these organizations on a regular basis.
My discussion with the Club covered my High School Football background, including my All-Conference and Alabama Academic All-State status, as well as, receiving the Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete award. I discussed how football builds character and will influence these young people throughout their lives. I did ask about parent's concerns, as should all candidates. I shared my position that all programs representing Beavercreek City Schools should strive for excellence. The Beavercreek Band is a wonderful example of how dedicated students, parents, staff, and administrators can develop a program that rises to the very top of National recognition. Issues that the parent's conveyed to me about the Band and support of the Band, I directed back to the principal, athletic director and superintendent. Board members in no way have any authority or power, influence, or represent the Board outside of public Board meetings without a vote of the Board. I am sure you are aware of this. I don't see Mr. Absher's opinion of what we discussed at the meeting as an endorsement.
Peg , I will say how deeply disturbed I am with your e-mail to Mr. Absher, a dedicated parent volunteer. In my opinion, this type of intimidation and threatening communication is inappropriate for a sitting Board Member. I respect and appreciate your work for Beavercreek City Schools, especially your efforts with Mr. Morrison to secure improvements to the Football Stadium...which does support other activities outside of football. It is also my opinion that your e-mail brings credence to the innuendo and rumor about your intimidation methods and the use of your position to improperly influence administrators and organizations.

I am very deeply disturbed to read this message. First, the football
club, I believe, operates as a 501(3)(c) nonprofit in support of the
school district. I believe you have just put that nonprofit status at
risk. You are not a Political Action Committee and I believe if you
check with your attorney you are going to find that you have gone beyond
your charter.

Inviting a political candidate to attend a school related function for
the purposes of giving his pitch for election is a foul. The candidate
should know better, as well.

In addition, your support of this candidate to entities in the business
community is a representation of the school district. You simply have
no authority to do this. It appears that the district is backing your
endorsement.

I am referring this to the district authorities who deal with these type
of issues for their action. Meanwhile, since I really don't want to see
any harm come to the Football Club (who do you think was half of the
team that got your field, anyway?) I would make some suggestions:

You owe the other five candidates and audience with the same people, and
it cannot be on school grounds.
You, and the candidate, owe the other five people an apology as well. I
think you better send and email to all the people this one has been sent
to telling them where the meeting you are scheduling will be.

This is a very serious matter. I suggest you get on it. Any one of the
candidates, or the district can file a complaint that will definitely be
supported. You have nicely documented it for us.

BEAVERCREEK — A school board candidate’s visit to a football booster club meeting and subsequent e-mail from the club president offering information about his platform has upset other candidates.

Robert Dotson, one of five candidates for three school board seats, visited a Beavercreek Football Club meeting at the high school earlier this month to “talk about what concerns parents had.”

After the meeting, the group’s president, Tim Absher, sent an e-mail to some club members offering information about Dotson while acknowledging the club couldn’t officially back a candidate.

Generally, Ohio law prohibits nonprofit organizations from getting involved in campaigns. There are exceptions for public forums and other events when equal time is offered to all candidates.

Dotson’s visit and Absher’s e-mail raised a red flag with two sitting board members, Peg Arnold and Joyce Carter, who feared the move could put the group’s nonprofit status in jeopardy.

“I’m very concerned about making sure we play by the rules,” said Arnold, who sent a message to the club warning about the conflict. Arnold denied rumors she has campaigned at parent teacher organizations in past races.

Allowing only one candidate to speak to the group is unfair, Carter said.

Kim Grant, another candidate, said if Dotson broke the rules she didn’t think he did so maliciously. Candidate Donna Dempsey declined comment.

Dotson said he went to the booster meeting because he was interested in the club and was not campaigning.

“It just came down to talking about football and (club members) concerns,” he said.

Dotson added that he felt Arnold’s letter to club president Absher was “intimidating and threatening.”

Absher said Tuesday if there was an appearance of conflict it was an “innocent mistake on my part.”

Ryan Johnson is a lifelong resident of Lake County and graduate of Mentor High School. He attended John Carroll University and Lakeland Community College.

He is employed as the Sales Manager for Royal Oak Recycling in Cleveland.

For the past five years he has served as Vice President of the Lake-Geauga Young Republicans.

Since 2007 he has also been the National Committeeman for the Ohio Young Republicans.

He is the former 2nd Vice Chairman of the Lake County Republican Party and sits on their Central Committee.

COLUMBUS — After years of being down and out, Ohio Democrats hit a winning streak: capturing the governor’s office and a U.S. Senate seat in 2006, and winning control of the Ohio House and delivering Ohio for Barack Obama in 2008.
But a sour economy, two potentially expensive primaries and internal squabbles could hurt the Democrats going into the 2010 election cycle, according to key people on both sides of the aisle.
Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern is worried that potentially bitter primaries could hurt the Democrats’ chances in 2010.
“I think primaries tend to ... diminish resources,” he said. “In a period of time when we should be focusing on the other side, we’re looking inward. That’s never helpful for a party.”
Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine said, “It gives us a great opportunity. Nobody is handing us anything. We’re not taking anything for granted, but it gives us a great opportunity.”
Here are some of the issues the Democrats face:
• Gov. Ted Strickland’s popularity is tumbling as Ohioans are starting to pin the struggling economy on him. Quinnipiac University polls show 46 percent of Ohio voters approved of Strickland’s job performance as of June, down from 63 percent in February.
• So far, party leaders failed to avoid a costly primary that pits Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner against Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher for U.S. Senate.
• Democrats will have a primary in the secretary of state’s race. Franklin County Commissioner Marilyn Brown — Brunner’s friend — and state Rep. Jennifer Garrison, D-Marietta, are both running.
• Garrison got into the race last week, leaving her House seat vulnerable for the GOP to pick off. The Democrats control the House by a razor-thin four-seat margin.
• Attorney General Richard Cordray is being challenged by well-known former U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, who lost his re-election bid in 2006.
• The state party gave Treasurer Kevin Boyce $225,000 — 44 percent of his fundraising — to run for election. His opponent, state Rep. Josh Mandel, R-Lyndhurst, raised $1 million without a check from the GOP.
“We feel very good about Kevin Boyce’s candidacy. We know with some additional attention and resources he’ll be elected to a full, four-year term,” Redfern said. And he added that the party has at least two promising candidates interested in running for Garrison’s seat.
Both parties will make a full-court press for governor, auditor and secretary of state, who each sit on the Apportionment Board, which redraws legislative district lines after the U.S. Census. The political party that controls the Apportionment Board can draw the districts to its advantage for years to come.
“The way things are lining up for 2010, it looks like a pretty competitive election,” said University of Akron political scientist John Green. He added that if the economy still looks grim in the fall of 2010, it could be tough on incumbents.

Bad press, including major mockery of the plan by comedian Jon Stewart, led to President Obama abandoning his proposal to require veterans carry private health insurance to cover the estimated $540 million annual cost to the federal government of treatment for injuries to military personnel received during their tours on active duty.

The President admitted that he was puzzled by the magnitude of the opposition to his proposal.

"Look, it's an all volunteer force," Obama complained..

"Nobody made these guys go to war. They had to have known and accepted the risks. Now they whine about bearing the costs of their choice? It doesn't compute.."

"I thought these were people who were proud to sacrifice for their country," Obama continued. "I wasn't asking for blood, just money. With the country facing the worst financial crisis in its history, I'd have thought that the patriotic thing to do would be to try to help reduce the nation's deficit. I guess I underestimated the selfishness of some of my fellow Americans."

Dinner at the White House...

Once upon a time, I was invited to the White House for a private dinner with the President. I am a respected businessman, with a factory that produces memory chips for computers and portable electronics. There was some talk that my industry was being scrutinized by the administration, but I paid it no mind. I live in a free country. There's nothing that the government can do to me if I've broken no laws. My wealth was earned honestly, and an invitation to dinner with an American President is an honor.

I checked my coat, was greeted by the Chief of Staff, and joined the President in a yellow dining room. We sat across from each other at a table draped in white linen. The Great Seal was embossed on the china. Uniformed staff served our dinner.

The meal was served, and I was startled when my waiter suddenly reached out, plucked a dinner roll off my plate, and began nibbling it as he walked back to the kitchen.

"Sorry about that," said the President. "Andrew is very hungry."

"I don't appreciate..." I began, but as I looked into the calm brown eyes across from me, I felt immediately guilty and petty. It was just a dinner roll. "Of course," I concluded, and reached for my glass. Before I could, however, another waiter reached forward, took the glass away and swallowed the wine in a single gulp.

"And his brother Eric is very thirsty." said the President.

I didn't say anything. The President is testing my compassion, I thought. I will play along. I don't want to seem unkind.

My plate was whisked away before I had tasted a bite.

"Eric's children are also quite hungry."

With a lurch, I crashed to the floor. My chair had been pulled out from under me. I stood, brushing myself off angrily, and watched as it was carried from the room.

"And their grandmother can't stand for long."

I excused myself, smiling outwardly, but inside feeling like a fool. Obviously I had been invited to the White House to be sport for some game. I reached for my coat, to find that it had been taken. I turned back to the President.

"Their grandfather doesn't like the cold."

I wanted to shout- that was my coat! But again, I looked at the placid smiling face of my host and decided I was being a poor sport. I spread my hands helplessly and chuckled. Then I felt my hip pocket and realized my wallet was gone. I excused myself and walked to a phone on an elegant side table. I learned shortly that my credit cards had been maxed out, my bank accounts emptied, my retirement and equity portfolios had vanished, and my wife had been thrown out of our home. Apparently, the waiters and their families were moving in. The President hadn't moved or spoken as I learned all this, but finally I lowered the phone into its cradle and turned to face him.

"Andrew's whole family has made bad financial decisions. They haven't planned for retirement, and they need a house. They recently defaulted on a subprime mortgage. I told them they could have your home. They need it more than you do."

My hands were shaking. I felt faint. I stumbled back to the table and knelt on the floor. The President cheerfully cut his meat, ate his steak and drank his wine. I lowered my eyes and stared at the small grey circles on the tablecloth that were water drops.

"By the way," He added, "I have just signed an Executive Order nationalizing your factories. I'm firing you as head of your business. I'll be operating the firm now for the benefit of all mankind. There's a whole bunch of Erics and Andrews out there and they can't come to you for jobs groveling like beggars."

I looked up. The President dropped his spoon into the empty ramekin which had been his creme brulee. He drained the last drops of his wine. As the table was cleared, he lit a cigarette and leaned back in his chair. He stared at me. I clung to the edge of the table as if were a ledge and I were a man hanging over an abyss. I thought of the years behind me, of the life I had lived. The life I had earned with a lifetime of work, risk and struggle. Why was I punished? How had I allowed it to be taken? What game had I played and lost? I looked across the table and noticed with some surprise that there was no game board between us.

What had I done wrong?

As if answering the unspoken thought, the President suddenly cocked his head, locked his empty eyes to mine, and bared a million teeth, chuckling wryly as he folded his hands.

"You should have stopped me at the dinner roll," he said.

Obama’s White House is Falling Down

In the sixth month of his presidency, Obama has turned an economic downturn into an economic disaster, taking over and trashing entire companies, and driving the nation deep into deficit spending expected to pass 10 trillion dollars.

Abroad, Obama seems to have no other mode except to continue on with his endless campaign, confusing speechmaking with diplomacy. It is natural enough that Obama, who built his entire campaign on high profile public speeches reported on by an adoring press, understands how to do nothing else but that.

Ego driven photo op appearances and clueless treatment of foreign dignitaries

While the press is still chewing over Obama’s Cairo speech, this celebrity style coverage ignores the fact that Obama’s endless world tour is not actually accomplishing anything. Instead his combination of ego driven photo op appearances and clueless treatment of foreign dignitaries have alienated many of America’s traditional allies. Those who aren’t being quietly angry at Obama, like Brown, Merkel or Netanyahu, instead think of him as as absurdly lightweight, as Sarkozy, King Abdullah or Putin do.

While his officials carry out their dirty economic deeds, Obama responds to any and every crisis as if it were a Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland musical, with a cry of, “Let’s put on a show.” Thus far Obama has put on “shows” across America, Europe and the Middle East. And what the adoring media coverage neglects to cover, is that Obama’s shows have solved absolutely nothing. They
have served only as high profile entertainment.

Neither alienating America’s traditional allies, through a combination of arrogant bullying and ignorance, nor appeasing America’s enemies, has yielded any actual results. Nor does it seem likely to. Islamic terrorism is not going anywhere, neither are the nuclear threats from North Korea and Iran. While Obama keeps smiling, the global situation keeps growing more grim.

At home, if Obama was elected as depression era entertainment, the charm of his smiles and his constant appearances on magazine covers appear to be wearing thin on the American public. Despite the shrill attacks on Rush Limbaugh or the Republican Enemy of the Weak-- the Democratic party of 2009, is polling a lot like the Republican party of 2008. The Democrats have suddenly become the incumbents, and the only accomplishment they can point to is lavish deficit spending, often on behalf of the very same corporations and causes they once postured against.

The European Union Parliament’s swing to the right cannot be credited to Obama, though doubtlessly some European voters seeing socialist economic crisis management on display in the world’s richest country decided they wanted none of it, but it is part of a general turning against federalism. And Obama’s entire program is dependent on heavily entrenching federalism at the expense of individual and state’s rights. Yet that is precisely his achilles heel with independent voters who are polling against more taxes and expanded government. And no amount of speeches by Obama can wish away his 18 czars or the national debt he has foisted on generation after generation of the American people.

That leaves Obama with a choice between socialism and the independent voter. And thus far he has chosen socialism.

Obama’s tactic of hijacking Bush Administration era policies on the economy and the War on Terror, and exploiting them as trojan horses to promote his own agenda, have left him coping with a backlash from his own party, as well as general Republican opposition.

His Czars are meant to function as the bones in an executive infrastructure accountable to no one, but a lack of accountability isn’t just another word for tyranny, but for incompetence. A functional chain of command is accountable at multiple levels if it is to function effectively. Obama’s White House by contrast is in a state of over-organized chaos, the sort of organized disorganization that undisciplined egotistical leftists naturally create for themselves, complete with multiple overlapping levels of authority and no one in charge but the man at the top, who’s too busy doing other things to actually be in charge.

Dennis Blair as National Intelligence, who collaborated with the Muslim genocide of Christians in East Timor, trying to muscle out the CIA to create his own intelligence network, is typical of the kind of chaos being spawned by every chief in an expanding government bureaucracy working to make sure that all the Indians answer to him. Similarly the National Security Council wrestling with the State Department, highlighted by Samantha Power getting her own specially created NSC position to butt heads with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, illustrates the state of conflict and chaos in American foreign affairs. A state of chaos so pervasive that incompetence has now become commonplace, and no one can even be found to double check the spelling of a Russian word that is meant to be the theme of American’s diplomatic reconstruction with Russia, or to pick out a gift for the visiting British Prime Minister..

Meanwhile on the economy, Obama exploited the ongoing bailouts, transforming them from bailouts into takeovers meant to shift the balance of power in what had been a democracy and socially engineer not only corporations, but the lives of ordinary Americans. But the public’s patience with corporate bailouts is at an end, most Americans were never happy with them to begin with, and want them to end. The death of Chrysler at the hands of Fiat and the UAW might look like a victory in the union ranks, but it doesn’t play too well outside Detroit. And tacking on CAFE standards that will kill the pickup truck and the SUV will badly erode Obama in the swing states, if exploited properly in 2010 and 2012. Despite the constant media barrage, orchestrated out of the White House, the public is growing disenchanted with the performance of Obama and the Democrats.

With unemployment booming and the economy dropping, the jobs aren’t there and the spending is out of control. Republicans today are polling better on ethics and the economy, than the Democrats are. That shows a trend which is likely to register in the mid-term elections in 2010, in the same way that the EU parliamentary elections served as a shock to the system.

In the opposition, Republicans are free to embrace the rhetoric of change, to champion reform and push libertarian ideas about the size and scope of government. In turn all Obama has is his celebrity fueled media spectacle world tour. A charade now serving as a parallel to the depression era entertainment that functioned as escapism in a dour time. But before long, it may be Obama that the American public will want to escape from.

Obama has tried to play Lincoln, Reagan, JFK and FDR-- but in the end he can only play himself, a shallow, manipulative and egotistical amateur who is in over his head, and trying to drag the country down with him. Obama’s White House is falling down and while the flashbulbs are still glittering and the parties are going on in D.C. and around the world, Obama and the Democratic Congress may be headed for a recession of their own.

A site called Innocent Bystanders is doing the wonderful service of tracking unemployment numbers against the projections that the Obama administration used to justify the $800 billion, pork-laden "stimulus" bill. The Obama administration projected what unemployment would be if the bill was passed, compared to what would happen if there was no "stimulus" package. Unfortunately, reality has taken a quite different turn--unemployment is much worse than the predicted "no stimulus" scenario. In fact, looking at the trend line, it seems obvious that the $800 billion bill has had no impact whatsoever--no positive impact, anyway.

Newt Gingrich, a Republican, served in the House from Georgia from 1978 and
as House Minority Whip in 1989. He was Speaker of the House from 1995 to
1999.

During that time he never made use of military aircraft.

Nancy Pelosi, Democrat from California , is current Speaker of the House.
The Pentagon provides the House speaker with an Air Force plane large enough
to accommodate her staff, family, supporters, and members of the California
delegation when she travels around the country. But, Pelosi wanted routine
access to a larger plane. It includes 42 business class seats, a fully
enclosed stateroom, an entertainment center, a private bed, state-of-the-art
communications system, and a crew of 16. Pelosi wanted "carte blanche for an
aircraft any time", including weekend trips home to San Francisco. Pretty
nice but very expensive perk!

Her Air Force C-32 costs approximately $15,000 an hour or approximately
$300,000 per trip home.

And she has the guts to confront the Big Three CEOs for flying their
corporate jets to Washington!

We haven't heard any comment on Queen Pelosi's snit about having to ride
home in the small private, economy jet that comes with the Speaker's job.
Remember how Madame Pelosi was so aggravated that this little jet had to
refuel while transporting her to California every week? Remember that she
insisted on a luxurious 200-seat jet to fly her to California nonstop,
instead?

Washington legislators who observed the Madame's Big Fat jet grinned with
glee as everyone was informed that Nancy 's luxury Jet will require American
tax payers to buy thousands of gallons of expensive jet fuel every week. She
only works 3 days a week but her gas-guzzler luxury jet flights home, to
California, cost taxpayers $60,000 one way! As Joe noted, 'Unfortunately we
have to pay to bring her back on Monday night,' so there goes another
$60,000.

That is $480,000 per month or an annual cost to taxpayers of $5,760,000. And
she complains about the cost of the war? She could take the smaller jet
which she says would cramp her style -- but since her flying in style takes
precedence over war costs -- what the heck, eh?

Military families in this country do without while this woman, who heads up
the most do-nothing Congress in the history of our country, spends lavishly
to fly herself and associates to and from California every week.

Madame Pelosi expects you and me to conserve our carbon footprint by driving
smaller cars and buying a bicycle pump to over-inflate our tires for better
economy while she and her cohorts waste tax payer dollars.

Auditor Taylor to seek re-election, not U.S. Senate seat

State Auditor Mary Taylor well seek re-election next year and not run for the Republican nomination to the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Sen. George Voinovich, according to Greg Gantt, Montgomery County GOP chairman.

The state Republican Central Committee on Friday, May 15, endorsed Taylor for re-election.
Gantt said he was informed of Taylor’s decision earlier in the week and was pleased.
Taylor, however, would not confirm her decision, but issued this statement:
“I appreciate the endorsement of the Ohio Republican State Central Committee and Executive Committee. I will make an official announcement of my intentions for 2010 later next week.”
State GOP offficials, however, had wanted to avoid a primary and were pleased.
“Mary Taylor has done an outstanding job as our state auditor for the last two years, keeping the governor accountable, which is what she’s supposed to do,” said John McClelland, Ohio GOP spokesman.
News of Taylor’s decision followed the announcement on Tuesday, May 12, from Democratic Hamilton County Commissioner David Pepper that he’s running for auditor next year.
Ohio Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern wasn’t impressed with Taylor’s decision.
“I think if you ask 10 Ohioans who Mary Taylor is, nine wouldn’t know and the tenth wouldn’t return your phone call,” said Redfern. He said the winner in the auditor’s race will be the candidate who works hardest at jobs such as meeting the voters and Pepper “is that kind of candidate.”
The auditor is on the five-member Apportionment Board that will draw new state legislative districts after the 2010 census.
Taylor’s decision avoids a battle with former U.S. Rep. Rob Portman of the Cincinnati area for the GOP Senate nomination. Cleveland-area auto dealer Tom Ganley also has said he plans to seek the nomination.
On the Democratic side, Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher are seeking the nomination.

U.S. Rep. Steve Austria does not want former prisoners from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba sent to Ohio - and he’s introduced a bill to keep it from happening.

Austria, R-Beavercreek, introduced a bill Thursday, May 7, to keep enemy combatants currently housed at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from being transferred to prisons in Ohio. The bill also bars the use of federal dollars to build facilities in Ohio to house enemy combatants from Guantanamo.

Austria’s bill -Â cosponsored by U.S. Reps. Bob Latta, R-Bowling Green, Jean Schmidt, R-Loveland, Jim Jordan, R-Urbana and Pat Tiberi, R-Columbus - comes after a handful of lawmakers from other states, including Minnesota and California, introduced similar bills to keep Guantanamo prisoners from being sent to their state.

Austria said he and other members of Congress are worried that President Obama, who promised during the presidential campaign to close Guantanamo, hasn’t crafted a plan for where to send the approximately 245 detainees currently located there.

Obama earlier this year issued an executive order to close the Guantanamo detention center. On Monday, the House Appropriations Committee turned down Obama’s request for about $80 million to move prisoners from Guantanamo because he had yet to release a plan for where he intended to send them.

“I don’t believe Congress should approve the administration’s request for funds until they have a clear plan in place of how they’ll be relocated and where they’ll be relocated that ensures the safety of all Americans,” he said.

This bill is Austria’s first standalone bill since he came to Congress in January, although he has also attached an amendment supporting greater military pay raises to an earlier bill.

$122.2 Million in Medicaid Savings Overlooked

April 29, 2009
Columbus - Auditor of State Mary Taylor today said ideas to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Ohio’s Medicaid program and save hundreds of millions of dollars in the process continues to be overlooked by state policy makers at a time when Ohio’s budget is in distress.

Members of the Ohio House disregarded a proposal to implement several recommendations from the Auditor of State’s Medicaid Performance audit with potential savings to Ohio taxpayers of $122.2 million annually.

“I have been asked, ‘What would you cut?’ to solve the state’s budget crisis,” Taylor said. “Since I took office, I have discussed practical solutions and proven practices from the Medicaid Performance audit that could result in hundreds of millions in program savings. Unfortunately my solutions to save tax dollars and make Medicaid more efficient and effective continue to be ignored.”

The proposal, offered as an amendment to the state budget by Representative Barbara Sears (R-Sylvania), includes eight Medicaid performance audit recommendations. Three of those recommendations would result in annual savings of $122.2 million. They are:

Full implementation of a statewide E-prescribing program – $62.2 million
Implementation of a disease management program for certain Medicaid recipients – $54 million
Coordination of benefits for Medicaid recipients who also belong to a private health insurance plan – $6 million
The five remaining recommendations from the Auditor of State’s performance audit would result in improvements to management efficiencies if implemented.

As a state legislator in 2005, Taylor introduced a measure that was included in the state’s biennial budget bill directing the Auditor of State to conduct a performance audit of Medicaid.

The initial performance audit, released in December 2006, provided the incoming administration with 109 recommendations to improve Ohio’s Medicaid program and cut costs without slashing critical services. The original recommendations, if fully implemented, had the potential to save taxpayers more than $400 million annually.

A subsequent Medicaid status report update, released by Taylor in December 2008, identified 54 recommendations – totaling more than $302.8 million – that have not been implemented.

Three staff members for Vote Today Ohio, an independent get-out-the-vote organization supporting Barack Obama, pleaded guilty in Franklin County this afternoon to improper voting. The three came to Ohio from states where Obama was likely to win in an effort to swing Ohio's electoral college vote toward their candidate, Judge Charles A. Schneider said. The judge gave all three 60 days in jail but suspended it if they paid a $1,000 fine. He also ordered a year's probation.

The three are Daniel Hausman, 32, and Amy Little, 50, both of New York, and Yolanda Hippensteele, 30, of California. They told the court they had good intentions when they registered to vote and cast ballots the same day in early voting at Veterans Memorial.

"I was paying rent and living full-time in Ohio," Hippensteele told the judge, "I didn't attempt to vote in another state. ... I think it's all a misunderstanding. I have a profound respect for the voting process."

Assistant Prosecutor Brian Simms said the three later tried to rescind their registration and cancel their votes; two were successful. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien had warned visiting campaign staff members that they shouldn't vote here if they didn't plan to stay after the election.

Schneider told the three that "rescinding your request is like giving back the money once you've been caught."

His predecessor was once referred to as “Porker of the Month” by an anti-earmark watchdog, but if U.S. Rep. Steve Austria aims to fill former U.S. Rep. Dave Hobson’s earmark-securing shoes, he ain’t doing it this year.

U.S. House members were asked to post all their earmark requests on their websites earlier this year. For Austria, R-Beavercreek, it was easy: He hasn’t asked for any earmarks.

Austria spokeswoman Courtney Whetstone said Austria opted not to request any earmarks because of the current economic climate.

As for the rest of the delegation: House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-West Chester, makes it a policy not to request earmarks. U.S. Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, asked for three, one in Lima, one in Mansfield and one in Findlay and U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Loveland, asked for two, one in Cincinnati and one for a corridor between Cincinnati and Clermont County. U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Centerville, meanwhile, requested nearly 50, many benefitting Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which also adjacent to Austria’s district.

Auditor Taylor: Strickland tardy in turning over records for audit

Auditor Mary Taylor on Monday, March 2, said she can’t audit the state’s books for the last fiscal year because Gov. Ted Strickland’s administration so far hasn’t turned over the necessary financial records.

Taylor, Ohio’s only Republican statewide executive officeholder, said the delay appears “unprecedented” and calls into question Democrat Strickland’s commitment to being transparent and accountable to the voters.

“How will the governor know where to go fiscally if he doesn’t know where he’s been?” Taylor asked at a press conference at her office.

The financial records she needs detail how much money the state took in, how the money was spent and how much was on hand on June 30, 2008, the end of the last fiscal year.

Taylor sent a letter to Strickland, House Speaker Armond Budish, D-Beachwood, and Senate President Bill Harris, R-Ashland outlining her concerns. She also sent the letter to William Shkurti, Ohio State University senior vice president and chairman of the State Audit Committee.

Strickland spokeswoman Amanda Wurst said that Strickland was “concerned about the delay and has asked the Office of Budget and Management and other agencies to pull this information together as quickly as possible.”

Taylor said she understands there have been problems with the state’s $158 million OAKS payroll and accounting system but added that her office had been able to pull the data it needed for its audit from the system.

Strickland understands that state agencies are completing their financial reporting with this system for the first time, said Wurst.

“I am aware of the burden of implementing a new accounting system, however, failing to prioritize preparation of financial statements stands in the way of a timely audit and I believe the taxpayers of Ohio deserve nothing less,” Taylor said in the letter.

The auditor also said the lack of an audit on the state’s financial condition could affect the bond rating, which determines how much it costs to borrow money.

If a school district or local government had been this tardy in providing the records, Taylor said she would have declared it “unauditable” which in some cases would have resulted in financial penalties. There is no deadline for the state to provide the financial records for the audit, she said. She said she might discuss establishing such a deadline with the legislature.

Taylor’s letter comes with the current fiscal year set to expire June 30, 2009, and the legislature now working on a new two-year budget in the midst of a major economic slowdown and decline in state revenues.

We don't like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell (You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them).

We'll keep the capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart and Wall Street. You can have your beloved homeless, homeboys, hippies and illegal aliens. We'll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO's and rednecks. We'll keep the Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood.

You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us. You can have the peaceniks and war protesters.. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we'll help provide them security.

We'll keep our Judeo-Christian values.. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism and Shirley McClain. You can also have the U.N.. but we will no longer be paying the bill.

We'll keep the SUVs, pickup trucks and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Subaru station wagon you can find.

You can give everyone healthcare if you can find any practicing doctors. We'll continue to believe healthcare is a luxury and not a right. We'll keep The Battle Hymn of the Republic and the National Anthem. I'm sure you'll be happy to substitute Imagine, I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, Kum Ba Ya or We Are the World.

We'll practice trickle down economics and you can give trickle up poverty your best shot. Since it often so offends you, we'll keep our history, our name and our flag.

Would Create Budget Surplus, Experts Believe

President Barack Obama is mulling a controversial new tax program that would require members of his Cabinet to pay taxes owed under the Federal tax code, the White House confirmed today.
While the unorthodox tax proposal is reportedly "only in the planning stages," it is being eyed as a possible way to balance the Federal budget.
"According to projections, if members of the Cabinet actually paid their taxes, we could wind up with a budget surplus in excess of $18.2 billion," said Obama economic adviser Paul Volker.

Mr. Volker said he strongly favored the plan, but added, "Fortunately for me, I'm not officially in the Cabinet." But imposing taxes on Cabinet members may be easier said than done, critics of the plan warn. "Remember, these people are not used to paying taxes," said one White House source. "They are going to be hopping mad about this."

Another wrinkle in the plan is how the taxes would actually be collected, with President Obama reportedly favoring a cash-at-the-door entry fee for every Cabinet meeting.
"If they don't have the money, they don't get in," said the source. "They're not going to be able to just sail into the White House for free like the Jonas Brothers."

When told of Mr. Obama's plan to make his Cabinet members pay taxes, Fmr. Sen. Tom Daschle responded, "Whew! Sounds like I dodged a bullet."
